With schools being temporarily closed due to the Corona Virus Covid 19 pandemic, the need to home school kids have exponentially increased and become more of a necessity than an option for parents with kids of school going age.
This new development has put parents in the position being a tutor for their kids, especially for those who cannot afford to hire a private tutor. Home schooling can demanding and lead to frustration especially when you have more than one kid to keep up with, and do not have structure or organization.
Here are some tips to help make homeschooling less tedious and more organized and effective.
- SET UP A DESIGNATED LEARNING SPACE / CORNER
Living, playing and learning under the same roof can be somewhat tricky. Kids play around the house all the time, but having a designated learning space that sets the tone for learning can help them concentrate when they arrive at the learning space.
- CREATE A LEARNING SCHEDULE/ TIMETABLE
Kids excel when they have a routine, it creates balance and structure for them, hence their performance at school. Learning from home, despite creating the environment, can be a bit tricky if there is no structure or organization.
- TAKE BREAKS AND ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES TOGETHER
Taking breaks from learning helps kids relax and doing family activities during these breaks help for family bonding time. Activities such as baking a snack, trying a new recipe together or making a meal which involves them can be exciting while simultaneously bonding family.
- INCORPORATE P.E / GYM CLASS / PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Physical activities / exercises make kids alert, help sharpen their brains and enable them learn better. Involving kids in activities that they love could also be a form of the playing breaks they observe at school, from learning. Involve them in activities such as such as running round the compound, soccer, basketball, push up or squats in the living room.
- INVOLVE THEM IN HOUSE CHORES
Chores teach kids responsibilities and could be a form of recreational activities, while giving them a break from learning. Age appropriate chore such as laying of beds, putting away and arranging shoes, picking up toys, arranging books, preparing the table for a meal, or helping with laundry can engage kids and make them more responsible.
- INTRODUCE FUN / EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Kids being home means they have a lot of time on their hands, introducing activities such as drawing and painting or educational games can also be a vital part of effective home schooling.
- INCORPORATE READING
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. Reading to kids or having them read to you why you help them pronounce big words can help to develop their vocabulary. They can use the opportunity to note down new words and their meanings / synonyms in a word diary. This is the time to visit the story and educational books aisle when you go shopping

Homeschooling I the best time to learn to lay a new instrument if it is available or affordable to parents. Learning to play the piano, guitar etc.
